I keep meaning to join the International Dark Sky Association -- at least in part because I remember how wonderful the stars used to be at Brush Creek, back before everyone had these wretched yard lights that come on at dusk and waste power all night long (if you really need to see the possums coming to raid the dog dish, get a motion detector).

Up here they have discovered it messes up the migrating birds, too. They get disoriented at night and whack into the buildings... The Audubon Society has managed to convince the government to turn off their lights late at night during migratory season. I'd think turning off the lights late at night in any season would just be common sense.
